For optimal light therapy treatment, use the following guidelines when purchasing a light box:
- Choose a light box that has been clinically tested to be safe and effective.
- Choose a light box that has a large screen size. Smaller light boxes make it difficult to keep your eyes within the therapeutic range of light.
- Choose white light over colored light. Blue light has been proven to cause eye damage and has no known benefit over white light.
- Choose a light box that will project light downward. A light box that sits below you will project light up into your eyes making light therapy sessions uncomfortable.
- Choose a light box that has a proper diffusion screen. The screen should work to even out the distribution of light and block harmful UV rays.

How to Use:
When used correctly, the Day-Light is an effective way to help alleviate symptoms experienced with depressive and sleep related disorders during the fall and winter months or all year round.
Light therapy has been proven to safely treat: Seasonal Affective Disorder, the Winter Blues, PMS, Antepartum Blues, Circadian Sleep Disorders, Jet Lag, Shift Work Adjustment and Nonseasonal Depression.
For optimal light therapy treatment, the Day-Light must be used with the height adjustable legs. There are 3 height adjustment options and the correct height will allow your eyes to be positioned toward the center of the light screen. Select the three-light setting which delivers 10,000 lux of illumination - the amount recommended by experts (the two light setting delivers 7,000 lux). Begin with 30 minutes at 10,000 lux shortly after awakening. People respond differently to light and treatment time may need to be adjusted. To find your optimal time to begin light therapy sessions, speak with your physician or go to the self assessment section of this website and complete the morningness-eveningness questionnaire.

Light Up Your Life

Depression is a recurring, disabling disorder that affects many people. In fact, some have estimated that up to 48% of the population will be affected by a mood disorder at least once in a lifetime. Most know that medication has become a major form of treatment for this problem, but few know that the response rate has been considered to be only slightly better than that of a placebo treatment. Furthermore, according the studies, psychotherapy's effectiveness appears to be largely similar to that of antidepressant medications.
Then there's light therapy. Bright light for the treatment seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, has been shown to be effective. In fact, light therapy has become one of the treatments of choice for SAD. Although how it exactly works is not completely understood, light is known to be a potent phase-shifting agent of circadian rhythms and acts on melatonin metabolism and secretion.
How much is enough? Well, the minimal intensity of artificial light that appears necessary for an antidepressant effect in SAD is 2500 lux for two hours, or alternatively, a brighter light exposure of 10,000 lux for 30 minutes (Tam 1995). Is it safe? Yes, bright light does appears to be safe, and side effects are mild, if the light does not contain substantial energy in the ultraviolet spectrum. Also important to know is that in SAD patients, light has been shown to be most effective when given in the morning (Terman 2001).
As you can tell, there is a lot of research to back up the use of light therapy if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder. And even if you don't, emerging research is showing that the benefit of light treatment is modest for people with NON-SEASONAL depression too!
Having said all that, the Uplift Technologies DL930 Day-Light 10,000 Lux SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) Lamp is one of my top recommendations. It can certainly crank out the recommended 10,000 lux, or less, due to its two-way switch. Another good thing about this product is it's portability: you can easily take it with you on trips if need be.
So when all is said and done, being relatively inexpensive and shown to be effective, you really don't have much to lose when trying this product. And if its not your thing, consider other options such as exercise. At least one study (Pinchasov 2000) has compared light therapy to exercise and found both to be EQUALLY effective for SAD. Readers might want to check out books such as Exercise Beats Depression for more on that. Good luck!
